Blues Sign First Round Picks Oshie
ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced today that the team has signed 2005 first round draft pick, T.J. Oshie and 2007 first round pick Lars Eller.
“I am happy that the Blues have been patient with me over the past
couple of years,” said Oshie. “I am now ready and proud to wear the
Blue Note next season. I would like to thank my family, who have
supported me all these years. I would also like to give a special
thanks to all the programs, coaches, and all of my teammates who have
made an impact on my life and hockey career.”
“I am really
excited about signing with the Blues,” said Eller. “It has always been
my dream to play in the NHL and I am one step closer to achieving my
ultimate goal.”
“We are happy to have T.J. and Lars in the
fold as both players will be important assets for this hockey club as
we move forward,” said Davidson.
Oshie, 21, was the Blues
first selection, 24th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. A native of
Everett, Washington, Oshie has spent the last three seasons at the
University of North Dakota, leading the Fighting Sioux to three
consecutive NCAA Frozen Four appearances.
The 6-0, 192-pound center was a first team All-WCHA selection and Top
10 Hobey Baker Award finalist this past season, finishing with a team
leading 45 points (18 goals, 27 assists) in 42 games played.
Oshie finished his three-year career at North Dakota, registering 142
points (59 goals, 83 assists) in 129 career games. His 142 career
points ranks him 30th all-time in North Dakota history.
Eller, 19, was chosen as the 13th overall pick by the Blues in the 2007
Entry Draft. This past season, the Rodovre, Denmark native helped
Frolunda J20 capture the Swedish Junior-20 SuperElit Championship.
Eller also played with Frolunda of the Swedish Elite League and with
Boras HC of the Swedish First League this past season. The 6-1,
198-pound forward represented Team Denmark at the 2008 World Junior
Championships, tallying six points (three goals, three assists). Eller
just recently represented Denmark at the 2008 World Championships,

Tigers Playmaker Nets 40th
If you’ve followed the Tigers at all this year, it’s hardly a surprise. For the entire season, Tyler Ennis
has been dazzling fans and scouts around the league with his incredible
blend of skill, speed, and accuracy. And on Tuesday night versus the
Edmonton Oil Kings, Ennis potted his 40th goal of the season in a
rather un-Ennis like fashion…into the empty net.
“It was really exciting. Throughout the game I had a lot of chances and
was getting a little frustrated because I couldn’t bury it. It was a
really unselfish play by Bretton Cameron to throw that one out to me and it felt pretty good,” said the Tigers left-winger.

Acolatse a Player to Watch
It's fun.
Or at least, it's supposed to be fun.
But every now and then, this Seattle Thunderbirds defenseman needs a reminder from his coaches that an opportunity to have fun at a higher level of hockey depends in part on staying focused at this, the Western Hockey League level.
When that focus is sharp, the 17-year-old Acolatse – whose heritage is part African, part American and part Canadian – can be a do-it-all sort on the ice. He can check. He can unload a wicked shot. And he can mix it up with anyone who wants to drop the gloves and have a go.

Stewart's 3 Leads to 2 Straight for Monsters
Facing the top team in their division and arguably one of the toughest
teams in the AHL, the Monsters defended their home ice by handing the
Marlies their first regulation loss of the season, 5-3.
Chris
Stewart picked a great time to score his first goal for the Monsters,
let alone a hat trick and an assist to boot. As a team, the Monsters
scored the most goals in a game this season (5), scored the most goals
in a period (3), and Stewart recorded the most points for a Monsters
player in a game (4).

Brodeur watches Weekes
PITTSBURGH -- One victory away from No. 500 for his career,
Martin Brodeur didn't get the start last night for the
Devils. He didn't even get a seat on the bench, having
to watch a strong performance from backup Kevin Weekes from

corner of Mellon Arena.
In his first start since Oct. 20 and only his third of
the season, Weekes stopped 23 of 25 shots to raise his
record to 2-0-1.

Torres breaks out
CALGARY -- Sometimes he's a raging bull.
And sometimes he's just plain bull.
He can be a dominating presence both physically and offensively,
often on the same shift, or he can sleepwalk through an entire 60

It all depends on how Raffi Torres is feeling that day.
"As it is with most guys who have the skill set and have the
inconsistency, it's all confidence," said head coach Craig MacTavish,
who called Torres's two-goal, seven shot, plus-3 outing in Phoenix
Thursday one of the best nights of his career.

Wayne Simmonds Selected 61st Overall By The Los Angeles Kings
Center Oscar Moller was the first of nine players selected by the Los
Angeles Kings (second-round, 52nd overall) in Saturday’s second and
final day of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft in Columbus.
Said Kings President/General Manager
Dean Lombardi from the draft table in Columbus, “They are all 18 years
old and each one of them has some assets to work with that I think will
translate well into NHL players. I’m such a believer in that it is what
we do next that is going to determine whether they become players. That
is the next step. We will see them at our development camp (in July)
and it is our job to make them better. They all have an asset and I
think they are all pretty good kids. We have to make them players and
we have to make them men.”

Five players to watch
ALEXEI CHEREPANOV, RW (Omsk): He broke Pavel Bure's rookie scoring
record in the Russian Super League this year, potting 18 goals. Scouts
agree that the Siberian Express is the top international player in this
year's class.
PATRICK KANE, RW (London Knights): The OHL's top scorer (62 goals) and
rookie of the year is a Daniel Briere clone. (As it happens, Kane hails
from Buffalo.) Says E.J. McGuire, director of the NHL's Central
Scouting Service, "He plays with speed and skill and has incredible vision." A
combination every GM in the new NHL would kill for.
JAMES VAN RIEMSDYK, LW (U.S. U-18s): A 6-foot-3, 205-pound power
forward, the Middletown, N.J., native plans to skate for New Hampshire next
season, which won't faze scouts who rave about his combination of size
and speed.
MARK OWUYA, G (Djurgarden): The No. 2-rated international goalie was a
contestant in Sweden's version of "American Idol." He's a rapper who
goes by the handle "Mark in da Park" when onstage. 'Nuff said.
KYLE TURRIS, C (Burnaby Express): A Western Conference scout says
Central's top prospect (66 goals) is in the "same mold as Paul Kariya: He
sees the ice three plays ahead of everyone else."

Miguel Cabrera to join National Leaque squad.
Miguel Cabrera accepted an invitation in the 2006 All-Star Home Run
Derby to join Ryan Howard, David Wright and Lance Berkman on the
National League squad. They will go head-to-head with the American
League quartet of David Ortiz, Troy Glaus, Jermaine Dye and Miguel
Tejada. "There are a lot of big names over there," said Cabrera,
adding he's not going to take the competition too seriously. "I'm going
to have fun, and that's it. When asked how many he could hit, Cabrera
said: "I guarantee one."
Miguel Cabrera may be a three-time All-Star at the tender young age of
23, but the Marlins' slugger made his debut in the CENTURY 21 Home Run
Derby, giving the fans a solid performance. While in the lead with
four homers, Cabrera came up short on each of his next three swings,
giving him seven outs. The slugger ripped the next pitch onto the
left-field ramp for his fifth homer, and one out later, he rattled off
three consecutive home runs, one of which measured 471 feet. Cabrera
hit one more homer in the round, bashing one of the special gold
baseballs into the bullpen in left-center field. For that homer, his
ninth, Century 21 made a $21,000 charitable donation. Cabrera
officially moved on to the second round. Cabrera was joined by Wright,
Boston's David Ortiz (10 homers) and Howard (eight). Cabrera advanced
to the second round with nine home runs and hit six more before being
edged for a spot in the finals by Ryan Howard of the Phillies. "I'm
glad I participated," Cabrera said. "I did my best out there and had a
lot of fun. It's harder than it looks. We don't normally swing like
that." Cabrera, Howard and David Wright, who all play in the National
League East, were the top three finishers in the event.
